At Plex, we know that every second counts when it comes to consuming that sweet, sweet content. And we know what a bummer it can be when those credits start to roll, then keep rolling… and rolling… and rolling… until you suddenly realize it’s been 15 minutes and you’re learning who the backup to the second best boy on the third production unit was on your way to being reassured that no animals were, in fact, harmed during the making of this film. Credit where it’s due, of course (and great for trivia!), but at some point the (next) show must go on!

Ta-daaa. It’s time to skip those outros.

Today, we’re taking the wraps off our brand new Skip Credits feature! It works a little bit like Skip Intro, AKA Intro Detection (though the underlying tech is quite different, more on that in a bit). When the credits start to roll, you get the option to skip them with a single click. Plex Pass holders can enable it for their personal media collection—so if you’ve been on the fence, maybe it’s time to finally make that upgrade. Want to see it in action first? Skip Credits is also available on our ENTIRE free streaming on demand catalog.

Credit detection works for both TV shows and movies, and it’ll even detect and let you skip directly to mid-credits or post-credits scenes (looking at you, MCU) with the same single click!

Our own eleven herbs and spices.

While our Intro Detection logic works super well for TV shows where we have multiple episodes to compare to each other looking for common themes (literally), credit detection is a totally different beast. We’ve worked hard to tune a machine learning algorithm to make sense of several inputs (text detection, the presence of black frames, and a few other secret ingredients) to come up with a reliable set of markers when credits begin and end. It’s a tricky problem, and there may still be some cases where it doesn’t go exactly to plan, but those cases should be few and far between at this point. Hat tip to all the folks in the forums who’ve helped us improve so far!

Ahhh, the wisdom of the cloud.

All that processing isn’t cheap, so we’ve also created a cloud-based repository to store the results in case you ever need to rebuild a library or do a clean install. By default, the results of all your local credit detection efforts are anonymously submitted to our new service, so if you ever need to do a rebuild or install, the results are available in seconds instead of burning hours of CPU time recomputing them.

Go forth, detect, and skip!

This feature works automatically for all the content in our streaming library, but if you’re a Plex Pass user looking to get started on your own library, you’ll need to make sure you’re running the latest Plex Media Server. You can trigger end credit detection for individual items by performing an “Analyze,” and your entire library will gradually be analyzed automatically as part of nightly maintenance (configurable in server settings under “Scheduled Tasks”). Check out our credits detection support article for more.

So go ahead, give it a spin…err, skip rather. Because in the words of Reading Rainbow’s LeVar Burton, you don’t have to take our word for it.

Hello friends!

2022 was a huge year for Plex and we can’t thank you enough for being the most important part of it! First off, this is the year we launched our new Discover feature, an important step for ensuring that Plex is the easiest, most comprehensive, and most insightful place to start your media viewing experience—whether you know what you want to watch or not. Now, Plex effortlessly points you directly to your favorite movies and shows across all your services—without you having to keep track of what title is on what app. Better yet, we’re able to provide authentic recommendations of what to watch on Plex, on Netflix, on HBO Max, and so much more. While streaming has gotten more and more confusing over time, Plex is on your side, trying to make streaming easy and fun again.

And if you’re reading this blog, you probably know that we’re a company built by passionate TV and movie nerds who are driven to build the best streaming community on earth. By helping to remove the pain and confusion from finding the perfect show or movie at the right time, we’re delivering on that mission of making Plex the centerpiece of your entertainment experience. Looking forward, Discover gives us an amazing foundation to continue to elevate the experience and value of Plex in 2023 and beyond. We know it’s part of a marketing tagline, but it’s true: we want Plex to take the struggle out of streaming.

This year we also brought on a ton of amazing content partners around the world. From huge globally recognized brands such as Paramount, FOX, PBS, BBC, NBCUniversal, Hallmark, and indie-film darling A24 to regional powerhouses such as Palatin from Germany, Shemaroo from India, Bounty Films from Australia, Arrow from the UK, Elevation from Canada, and so many more. And speaking of great free movies and shows, this month we’re excited to launch Breaking Bad on Stories by AMC. We also increased the number of quality free movies and free Live TV channels, so now Plex can always offer you something, no matter your mood (or attention span).

Don’t think that we’ve forgotten all our personal media fans either, since we’ve been hard at work at improving our platform and making your media collection quicker to search, curate, and stream to all your devices. We added even more ear candy to your Plexamp with features such as AutoEQ, Guest DJ, customizable home screen, link sharing, and track previews. Plex shines with support for more media formats than ever, including Dolby Atmos in your home theater. In short, we are dedicated to building upon our reputation as the gold standard in the personal media industry. Based on your feedback and requests, we added multiple edition support, new Windows 64-bit support, the ability to sync your watch state and ratings, and a new Home Theater PC app! (Keep the requests coming!) For those of you who use Plex to watch local TV with your antenna, we now have a hybrid guide that organizes all your antenna and streaming stations in one elegant interface. And with Discover Credits, personal media users (as well as free movie & TV users) now have a powerful new way of navigating your media libraries by favorite actors, directors, and writers.

As a business, we continued to grow and expand with amazing new employees from almost every continent in the world (sorry Antarctica!), many of whom got to meet in person as travel restrictions finally started to ease. With these new employees, we were able to bring in even more partners to the Plex ecosystem—from global studios and TV manufacturers, as well as a whole new palette of Plex perk partners. And we were able to sharpen our Plex logo with your input so that we can continue to be recognized and win new fans around the world in a very competitive streaming marketplace.

So as you can see, it’s been quite a year. And next year promises to be even bigger with some huge new features coming soon that we’re super excited to share with you. But as we said at the drop, none of this happens without you. Your support, your ideas, your bug reports, and features requests, it’s amazing to watch the Plex story continue to spread around the world. So we hope that at the end of the year, you’re able to find some time to relax and enjoy some quality time with friends and family. Around a good meal, a good conversation, or (you never know!) perhaps even a good movie or show.

– Keith, CEO of Plex

Movie geeks, film freaks, binge-watchers, cringe-haters, cinema lovers, soon-to-be trivia night winners; let’s all revel and rejoice! Now there’s a better way to see what films and shows your favorite actors are in, without ever leaving Plex. Introducing Discover Credits.

“Now where have I seen this person before?”

This happens to all of us (almost) all the time. It’s 3 AM on a pretty eventless Tuesday. You should be tucked in bed, ready for the grind in a few hours. But here you are, unable to stop watching Season 6 of Parks and Recreation for (probably?) the 8th time. You’re on Episode 4 and in walks the familiar face of Billy…who? What’s his name again? You look it up on Discover Credits and voila, it’s Billy Eichner (almost had that name at the tip of your tongue, didn’t you?).

That’s when your unreasonably restless brain decides you just have to find out, what was that (kind-of-okay) show he was in? A quick look at Discover Credits, and you see that it’s Friends from College (which Discover is quick to indicate that you can watch on Netflix). But then your eyes fall on Keegan-Michael Key and that takes you to the indie flick Afternoon Delight (playing free on Plex). And then you notice…nah, you get the idea.

Discover Credits is that easy-to-use and absolutely awesome upgrade that takes you on an endless journey of new discoveries (yep, really) and film facts (good and, at times, unnecessary).

Discover, Discover Credits

Click on an actor on a detail page or in the People section of search results. That’s it. You’re there. From here you can easily access:

  • Details: Short bio and social media links
  • Known for: The signature projects this person’s been involved with. Famous roles, breakthrough movies, most-awarded contributions, and so on.
  • Filmography: A list of all credited media they have been involved with, including which of their titles are available in your personal media libraries, on demand, or elsewhere via Discover—listed with the most recent first.

Actors You Recognize But Can’t Name Starter Pack

Let’s see how many of these familiar faces you can put a name to. (Answers below.)

The Cage Page

Discover Credits is also for Nicolas Cage (because what is he not in?). Simply search for him by name and find out more about every appearance he’s ever made—on Plex, or anywhere else.

Just be ready for a truly long scroll though. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Watchlist Now. Watch It Later

If you haven’t seen any of those movies yet, you can add any of them to your universal Watchlist, whenever you want. Simply click the Add to Watchlist button on the movie or show you want to save for later, including:

  • Free Movies & Shows on Plex
  • Titles from any other streaming service via Discover on Plex
  • Titles from servers you have access to
  • (Even) Unreleased movies

And, when you’re ready to watch, just look for the “Watchlist” source found easily on the sidebar of your Plex app and enjoy your dose of Nicolas Cage (or whoever your Nic Cage equivalent is).

Add to Your Watchlist
Discover Credits is now available on your Roku, Fire TV, Smart TVs, Apple TV, Android TV and mobile, iOS, and web.

Update Your App
We’re continuing to improve. So give it a whirl, and tell us all about your Discover Credits experience/issues/wishes in the comments below or forums.

Actors you can’t recognize from top left to bottom right:
Vinnie Jones, Keith David, Eric Roberts, Bill Duke, Ciarán Hinds, Peter Stormare, William Fichtner, Rick Yune

How about a date with data? We’re joined by a Plexian (a Plex Software Engineer, no less) who has shared with us the inside workings of the Plex Metadata team and what they do to enhance the Plex experience. Rated A for an awesome Q&A.

About Adriana

Adriana has worked behind the foundation of our cloud services and ensures the best metadata representation, across all Plex services.

Q&A on the A-Z of Metadata

Get a behind-the-scenes look on how our team works on constantly improving the Plex experience through Metadata.

Hi Adriana, thanks for joining us for Plex Pro Week, and giving us behind-the-scenes details on how you and your team work to continually improve and expand the Plex experience through metadata. Before we dive in, tell us a little bit about how you became a Plexian.

I was a back-end developer for Watchup, a news aggregation and streaming platform startup, when we got acquired by Plex. This was almost six years ago. There’s a funny story actually, I was planning on resigning from my former company exactly on the day when I found out about the acquisition, so after hearing the news I decided to stay, and I’m really glad I did.

We can’t help but ask—as both a user and a Plexian, what do you like most about Plex?

As a user it’s definitely the ability to stream my movies & TV collection on my TV. And maybe I’m biased here, but I love the magic that happens when you create a new library and you suddenly get to see your movies organized, complete with beautiful posters and data.

What I love most as a Plexian is the group of people that I work with, they’re all incredibly talented and kind to each other. We are spread across more than 20 different countries so there’s a lot of cultural diversity that is fun to discover. Everyone here has a voice and is encouraged to come up with new features or improvement ideas.

You’re currently a software engineer on the metadata team—can you tell us a little bit about your team?

Right now we’re a small team of three people. Tim has a long history working on the media server and more recently he’s especially focused on metadata integrations with the media server. Michal works on the cloud services back-end side, he’s the brain behind file matching and he’s also our go-to for ML (machine learning) solutions. My focus is mainly on the metadata, on the integrations with our data sources and on the cloud services back end.

You’re now in your sixth year with Plex (and we hope there’s many more where that came from)! What have you been able to accomplish so far with your team?

I joined Plex right as we were building the first cloud services for serving content so I got to be part of a small team that built our news, podcasts, and web shows services and the TIDAL integration from scratch. After that, I worked on our initial version for a cloud-based EPG data (TV guide data) provider and for a short while on our Movies & Shows service. In the past two years I’ve been working almost exclusively on metadata. I’ve helped build the supporting services for the new metadata agents and I work closely with other teams to support their metadata needs for Plex Media Server, Movies & Shows, Discover, or any other feature at Plex that uses data about movies and TV.

Ok, we’re ready to really nerd out. Can you tell us a little bit about how Plex uses/imports metadata to improve the app?

We use data from a lot of different sources like IMDb, TVDB, TMDB, fanart.tv, IVA, and others and aggregate them in order to generate the best representation for every piece of data that makes up a movie or a show entry. Some sources are refreshed once a day while others are fetched continuously throughout the day. Because each source is unique, some give us access to full exports, others use rate limited APIs so we have built a component that is internally called the metadata cache. Here we store the latest available representation for each movie/show from each source. This helps us to iterate more quickly over our aggregation code and, for instance, if today we change the way posters are selected the cache helps us recompute the poster for all movies much faster than if we had to use all these external APIs in real time.

And does Plex use metadata differently than other apps?

Most apps use metadata from a single source and for most apps that’s more than enough. We combine metadata from a multitude of sources. This does add a lot of complexity in our implementation but it also gives us much better coverage and better data in general as every source is better with some fields and we get to pick which fields we want to use from which source. Sometimes the selection process is as simple as a prioritized list of sources and other times it’s more complex. The simplest example I can give are summaries: we prefer some sources over others, but the length of the summary also adds a score and we penalize summaries that end mid-sentence.

We’re curious to know some of the most interesting/complicated metadata challenges that you’ve encountered so far. Got any you can share?

File matching is an interesting challenge and one that we constantly try to improve. While we stick to our guidebook on how files should be named, we do try to make an effort to support as many variations as we can. Changes done in that area of the codebase can be very subtle yet make a strong impact so we have a test set of about 60k filenames for movies and episodes that we run matching against every day and get alerted quickly if our accuracy level were to decrease.

Matching across sources is another one. Because we use aggregated data among multiple sources to generate our best representation of a movie we need to be able to match IDs across those sources. Some of the sources have external IDs to other sources, for instance TVDB and TMDB entries often have IMDb IDs. It gets tricky when these sources contradict themselves, when for instance a TVDB show and a TMDB show link to each other, but their IMDb IDs differ. It’s a brainteaser to figure out whom you believe in every edge case and sometimes we use our own matching logic to solve that problem.

Episode orders were the next most difficult detail to implement on the new agents because our metadata database schema assumed that an episode can have a single parent, so a single season, but with multiple episode orders, an episode can show up in multiple seasons. It also made cross source matching more difficult especially when it comes to seasons, because if the seasons contain a different set of episodes even though they are both Season 2, are they still the same? We believe that they are not so we had to refactor a lot of internals accordingly.

We’ve gotta know—what’s your favorite Plex Pass feature?

For me, it’s the additional little details that you get like trailers, lyrics, and intro detection.

Ok, final question. Can you share any fun hints about things in the works?

There are always tons of improvements happening on the data side and on PMS but there’s one upcoming feature that we’ve decided to share with you and that’s end credit detection. We’re adding support for credit markers and soon you’ll be able to skip watching the credits that you’ve already seen multiple times before moving on to your next episode.
